The Gardner Chamber Orchestra, conceived by Jeffrey
Kahane and Scott Nickrenz, brings music to the museum
in much the same way as Isabella Stewart Gardner did,
integrating music and art in a unique setting. Young musicians from colleges
and conservatories throughout Boston are given the opportunity to perform great
music under the direction of distinguished artists. Jeffrey Kahane directed the
Chamber Orchestra from fall 1991 to spring 1995, and then passed the baton to
Leon Kirchner and Paula Robison. When Kirchner stepped down as co-artistic director
of the orchestra, oboist Douglas
Boyd was appointed as his successor. Boyd continues to share the directorship
of the group with renowned flutist Paula Robison.
